Bomani Jones: London's 2012 Olympics Need a Nickname

Before we pack the Summer Olympics away, Bomani & Jones has a few suggestions for what to name these 2012 Olympics. Bolt was the star, Lolo was too big a story (ditto Gabby's hair), and somehow nut-punching was deemed more "in the Olympic spirit" than badminton position jockeying. But the big winner? Dominique Dawes, who trumped gold with diamond.

Olympic Legacy Questioned by Inner City London

One of the key aims of the London 2012 Olympics was to create a sporting legacy for Great Britain. Last year there was anarchy on the streets of London as rioting and looting spread across the city, just a short distance from the Olympic stadium. But now those most affected by the riots are asking how exactly things have changed, and wondering if the Olympic infrastructure will improve their own communities. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from Tottenham in North London.

Olympics 2012: NYC Athletes Challenge Racial Norms

WNYC:

In the U.S., the Olympic sports of swimming and gymnastics are dominated by white athletes. But in London on Saturday, two New York City teenagers will challenge that notion. Lia Neal, 17, is a half-black half-Chinese athlete from Fort Greene, Brooklyn who will race in the 4 x 100 meter freestyle. And John Orozco, 19, a Puerto Rican from Harding Park in the Bronx will show what he’s got inside the gymnastics arena.

Robots of Brixton [directed by Kibwe Tavares]

Brixton has degenerated into a disregarded area inhabited by London's new robot workforce - robots built and designed to carry out all of the tasks which humans are no longer inclined to do. The mechanical population of Brixton has rocketed, resulting in unplanned, cheap and quick additions to the skyline.

The film follows the trials and tribulations of young robots surviving at the sharp end of inner city life, living the predictable existence of a populous hemmed in by poverty, disillusionment and mass unemployment. When the Police invade the one space which the robots can call their own, the fierce and strained relationship between the two sides explodes into an outbreak of violence echoing that of 1981.
